On March 21, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, refugees, migrants, collectives, and unions will demonstrate against policies that turn borders into death traps.
Wars, imperialist rivalries, poverty, exploitation, and environmental devastation are forcing millions of people to uproot themselves. At the same time, the Greek government and the EU, in the name of “migration control,” are intensifying repression: they close legal entry routes, force people to choose increasingly dangerous journeys, militarize border regions, intensify deadly pushbacks, and criminalize migration, refugee status, and solidarity.
Racist propaganda is systematically inflamed, portraying migrants as responsible for unemployment and poverty—concealing the fact that these are the results of anti-popular policies—with the aim of dividing the working class into “locals” and “foreigners” .
Plevris’s recent racist anti-refugee laws reinforce this framework: they intensify the criminalization of migration, increase administrative detentions, make access to asylum more difficult, intensify repression, and restrict rights, while simultaneously they facilitate the exploitation of migrants, as a cheap and disposable labor force, without stable rights and in a state of constant precariousness, thus undermining the rights of all workers and fueling competition and racism.
In front of this situation, we respond with unity. Local and migrant workers are fighting together, because we are part of the same social class. Local and migrant workers are united in a common struggle for freedoms and equal rights, against exploitation and the capitalist and imperialist interventions that murder and uproot thousands of people.
We demand an end to the deadly border interdiction operations and “pushbacks.” We demand justice for the 600 dead refugees in Pylos, the 15 dead in Chios, and all those who perished in the waters of the Aegean, off Crete, and in the Evros River. No cover-up of the killings by the government, the Coast Guard, or Frontex. Those responsible must be punished, and accountability must be assigned to those who covered up, remained silent, or gave orders. The criminalization of refugee status and solidarity must stop.
We demand:
- The abolition of the EU’s racist Migration and Asylum Pact.
- Unrestricted access to asylum services and protection for asylum seekers.
- Dignified housing for refugees in our cities and villages. No to ghettoization, confinement, and the detention of refugees and migrants. Abolish camps, hotspots, and screening measures.
- Legalization of all immigrants without conditions or restrictions.
- Full political and social rights for all immigrants.
- Equal rights to work, education, healthcare, and pensions for refugees and immigrants.
- No revocation of asylum! No to deportations (especially of Palestinian, Turkish, and Kurdish political refugees).
- Release all refugees/migrants who are held in administrative detention or police custody for months.
- Open borders for refugees.
- Let us not get accustomed to death.
- Let the Mediterranean Sea become a sea of peace and brotherhood, not a watery grave.
- No human being is “illegal”.
